Wine defies dollar to reap $963m

Winery Tasting Rooms: Trick or Treat?

Missouri, Illinois grape growers fear for wine crop
Tony Kooyumjian has sensors in his vineyards that sound alarms in his house when temperatures fall to just above freezing during the growing season.
He relies on geography to protect his grapes, planting high on the rolling hills of Augusta, Mo., about 45 miles outside of St. Louis, and using trellises 6 feet above the ground to protect the crop from frost.

Inoculation could save wine grapes
At a test plot, Phil Brannen injects a grape vine with a bacterium similar to a deadly grape disease. If he pokes the needle into just the right spot, the vine's xylem, or central vein, will suck the bacterium right up, possibly giving the vine protection against the disease.

NZ wines 'more friendly to environment than French'
Our wine exports to the UK are more environmentally friendly than French wines, and that's despite them having to travel far more "wine miles".
Speaking ahead of last night's Food Hawke's Bay seminar at EIT, David Hughes, a food marketing expert from Imperial College, London, said if New Zealand winemakers shifted the debate from the distance their wine travelled to explaining their carbon footprint, they could compete with the world's best.
