The Senate confirmed seven nominees to serve in Gov. Ed Rendell's cabinet: Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf; General Services Secretary James P. Creedon; Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler; Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Yablonsky; Aging Secretary Nora Dowd Eisenhower; Health Secretary Dr. Calvin Johnson; and Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff. All are returning from Rendell's first term, except for Wolf.

Antioxidant Found in Red Wine Selects, Kills Cancer Cells in Experiment
A pigmentation chemical that makes grape skins and wines red has been found to kill human leukemia and lymphoma cells cultured in a lab, according to research to be published May 4 in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. However, the compound, a type of anthocyanidin common in plants, left healthy blood cells alone.

Vineyard managers in Napa this spring are bringing in workers from California's Central Valley literally by the busload, Hal Huffsmith observed to an audience of about 200 at Apr. 19's "Ahead of the Curve" seminar organized by the Napa Valley Grapegrowers (NVG). Those "mobile laborers," as Huffsmith, senior vice president of vineyard operations for Trinchero Family Estates, called them, are doing the ever-more-vital manual jobs of spring suckering and shoot thinning.

So it is that Robert Parker, founder of The Wine Advocate, has been called the most powerful wine critic, not only in America, but the world. Fair or not, he has been blamed for, and credited with, much of the current economic status of individual wines.
Parker is best known for popularizing the 100-point scale to rate wines, and if he gives a high number to a heretofore unrecognized wine, its value increases immediately. Australia is in the midst of a crippling drought, the country's worst on record. Many towns and cities have been forced to enact drastic water restrictions as reservoirs have run dry. Rivers have been reduced to a trickle. The drought has severely damaged the agricultural sector. Farmers are raising emaciated cattle and sheep. Cotton-lint production has plummeted. Wine grape and rice output has collapsed. Agricultural production has fallen by almost one-quarter in a year.
