  • Bordeaux 2005 “en primeur” like a record-attempt for the longest strip-tease

I often think of Bordeaux “en primeur” like a record-attempt for the longest strip-tease. The spotlights switch on, the music revs up, she (or he) waltzes onto the stage and…takes out a book to read. The whistling and shouts of “Get on with it” have little effect and so the audience take out some reading material, say the last issue of the Wine Advocate, with one eye on the stage for signs of any movement.

  • News Flash: France actually WON the '76 Paris Commemorative Tasting

From all accounts, it was primarily the French who balked at the idea of directly comparing and ranking newer vintages of their finest wines against California's best in last week's re-enactment and commemorative tasting of the 1976 Paris event. So everyone's attention, naturally, focused on the portion of the event in which many of the wines tasted in the legendary 1976 Paris tasting were re-tasted on both side of the Atlantic, and to everyone's surprise -- and to the horror of the overconfident French -- the older California cabs swept the mature Bordeaux vintages out to sea.

Good thing, as more and more small wineries are getting farther and farther out into the far reaches of the appellation.
